Tomás Ferrer, founding partner of Orvifrusa and current Chairman of the Board of Directors, analyzes the company’s 50-year history.
When he looks back over half a century of history… what is the first emotion or word that comes to mind?
Satisfaction. I feel satisfaction for reciprocating the family and the people who trusted the project 50 years ago. Satisfaction also for a job well done… Every year we produce more than two and a half million plants and trees that reach many parts of the world. These are very gratifying figures, but we know that they have been possible due to the efforts of several generations and the passion for this work.
How was the company born? What was its origin?
In 1973, a group made up of the sons and grandsons of small nurseries of Mediterranean plants, roses, fruit trees and vines, made the decision to combine our efforts, knowledge and capital to create a new company, Orvifrusa. The objective was to increase production, expand the range of species and presentations, improve quality and open new markets.
What were the first products marketed by Orvifrusa?
The first products that were part of our catalog were the Mediterranean plant, the rose bush, the fruit tree and the vine. Since then these products have continued to form part of our offer and that is why we are recognized experts in this type of crop. Today we have a more varied offer that we constantly try to expand.
What do you think have been the great milestones of the company in these 50 years?
In the first place, its constitution, because forming a company by a group of companies in the sector was an unusual event at that time. Perhaps the second most important moment occurred in 1999, when there were important changes in the shareholding that stimulated the company and promoted new projects. Subsequently, the consolidation of the new Ferrer generation, which has assumed the responsibilities of all Orvifrusa departments, from management, administration, through production, marketing and logistics. I am proud that the whole family works as a team for the project, adding experience and capacity to innovate and open markets.
What are Orvifrusa’s challenges and objectives for the coming years?
Continue working to adapt to the new regulations and forms of cultivation in order to meet the needs of our market. The objective is that the new generations can continue celebrating other achievements such as this 50th anniversary.
